Student Safety Tips: Safe Removal of Needles

September 11th, 2018

Needles should be disposed of it safely. However, discarded needles are sometimes found in public areas. Safe disposal saves yourself and others from getting hurt accidentally.

  1. Always use sharps disposal containers to dispose of needles safely. These containers can be found in the following washrooms:
    – AxX Washrooms, both genders
    – Bullman Center, both washrooms,
    – RecPlex Main Floor Entrance, Accessible Washroom
  2. Don’t try to pick up and dispose needles if you see them and stay an arm’s length away. Some needles might be contaminated. Campus Security is trained to dispose needles safely. Call them at (204) 786-6666 and give them details of the location.
  3. Be careful when disposing feminine hygiene products and waste. Don’t put your hand inside waste receptacles.
  4. If you accidently get pricked by a needle, call security and go to the nearest emergency room for immediate medical attention.

International Students' Healthcare Update

September 7th, 2018

International Students, your Manitoba Health insurance at the University of Winnipeg has changed!

Visiting/exchange students who are studying only for one term are covered by guard.me, same as before. These students will now show their guard.me identification at clinics, hospital, and pharmacies, instead of their Manitoba Health Card.

International Students studying for more than 6 months who were previously covered by Manitoba Health + Green Shield will now be covered by Manitoba Blue Cross + Green Shield, in what is now called the MISIP. MISIP is similar to Manitoba Health coverage and covers doctor visits, emergency hospital visits and basic drugs. These students will now show their Blue Cross Card at clinics, hospital, and pharmacies, instead of their Manitoba Health Card. They will still receive extended health coverage for other services like dental, eye care, massage, and counselling through Green Shield.

The UWSA is still the provider for Green Shield and all information about Green Shield coverage can be found on our website here: https://theuwsa.ca/healthplan/

The International Student Services Centre (ISSC) is the provider for Manitoba Blue Cross (the Manitoba Health equivalent) and you can find complete information about the MISIP on the Blue Cross website here: https://misip.ca

The University of Winnipeg is covering the costs for your Blue Cross Coverage until August 2019, so there is no extra charge till then. You can read more about that here: https://www.uwinnipeg.ca/student/intl/information-for-all-students/health-insurance.html

If you have any questions regarding the MISIP or your Blue Cross coverage, you can contact Justin at the ISSC Office, his contact information is below:

An Update about Fab Lab

August 22nd, 2018

The UWSA Bike Lab is suspending its Fab Lab programming for the semester. We want to offer better bike repair and maintenance services, so we’re going to be away for a bit to get additional training.

Fab Lab is shop time dedicated to women, trans and non-binary folks. We know this programming is important so we will try to be back as soon as possible.

We would also like to welcome our new Volunteer Coordinator, Bonique Dawiskiba-Clark to our team, who will be running our Fab Lab programming in the future! While we’re working on training our new mechanic, you can find similar programming at:

The Bike Dump Queendom nights on Mondays from 6-9pm, programming for Women and Queer folks at 631 Main St.

And

The Wrench’s Mellow Velo open shop alternating Sundays from 2-5pm and workshops for Women, Trans* and Femme folks at 1057 Logan Ave.

Or

Drop by during Open Hours on Mondays at Bike Lab, which is for everyone!

Visit the UWSA Bike Lab page or follow us on Facebook and Twitter for hours and updates.
