On September 30, University of Winnipeg Students’ Association (UWSA) encourages all students, staff, faculty and community members to wear an orange shirt to show support for residential survivors and bring attention to other injustices Indigenous children face today. The idea of wearing orange t-shirts was inspired by residential school survivor, Phyllis Webstad and her story. On her first day of school, Phyllis excitedly wore her orange shirt, only to have it taken away and replaced with an institutional uniform. The orange shirt represents the loss of identity and culture at the residential school – the effects of which still prevail to this day.
In response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions’ 94 Calls to Action, UWSA is committed to bringing awareness to the residential school experience. We want the participation of the greater community in delivering the message that Every Child Matters. UWSA in collaboration with the Indigenous Students’ Association will be holding an event in the ASSC to honor residential school survivors. Please join us for a discussion on how Indigenous people are reclaiming their language and culture in a way which is important for their wellbeing and nations.

Today is the last day to Opt-Out or Opt-Change of your UWSA Health Plan!
Domestic students who have equivalent alternative coverage (through your parents, spouse, partners or another job) can Opt-Out of the UWSA Green Shield Health Plan online here: Health Plan Opt-Outs
Green Shield is mandatory for international students.
Students who wish to Opt-Change and add their spouses, partners or dependents to their plan can do so by downloading this form here and submitting it to Info Booth in Centennial Hall.
It is also the last to Opt-Out of the U-Pass for those who meet the criteria. Check out the Opt-Out criteria and the process here: U-Pass Opt-Outs
September 12th, 2019
Your Green Shield coverage is active September 1, 2019 to August 30, 2020. However, your online accounts will not be active till the end of the Opt-In/Opt-Out Period that ends September 16. Thus means that when you try to access your account, your account status will be listed as inactive and online direct billing services will be down.
Please keep the receipts if you use your benefits between September 1-16. After your account is active, you can retroactively submit your claims and will be paid out by Green Shield.
For a detailed description of what is covered, check out your health benefits booklet: Benefit Plan Booklet – Full time and Part time.
You can also connect with Green Shield Customer Service and tell them that you’re on UWSA Green Shield Health Plan that isn’t active yet and want information on your coverage.

Some of you might have heard about a potential strike or lockout that might happen in September. We know that many students rely on bus service to get to school and we are very concerned about how a potential interruption of transit service would affect our members. While there has been no confirmation of service disruption and we hope that a resolution is achieved soon, we want to urge you to prepare for alternative transportation in case busses are not operating as scheduled.
If you cannot walk, bike or drive to school, please consider rideshare and carpooling. The University of Winnipeg Campus Sustainability Office has some recommendations here. The UWSA will also advocate for reasonable accommodation for students to University faculty. Depending on the length of service disruption, the UWSA and Winnipeg Transit will also begin discussions to get a portion of your U-Pass refunded.
As of this time, all classes will proceed as scheduled. Any changes will be communicated via the University of Winnipeg’s website. Please visit their FAQ section for more information.

Over the past year, the University of Winnipeg Foundation and the UWSA have had several discussions around responsible investing.
