Time to be Bold at the Polls and Election Results Party on October 21

October 16th, 2019

On October 21, it’s time to be bold and vote for student issues at the Federal Elections!

Voter turnout among young people aged 18 to 24 in the last federal election increased by 18.3 percentage points (from 38.8% in 2011 to 57.1% in 2015), the single largest increase for this age group since Statistics Canada began compiling the data. Imagine what could happen if that percentage was even higher?

Free education is possible. Now is the time to be bold and use your vote to demand access for all. Learn more about the issues here.

Sign the pledge online at: https://cfs-fcee.ca

To find your polling stations and ID requirements, register to vote at elections.ca.

After voting, join the UWSA at The Good Will Social Club from 7 PM onwards to countdown to the results together!
Students enter free and cheap drinks all night!

October 1st, 2019

Dear Members,

On September 24, 2019 the UWSA Board of Directors ratified a motion to remove the Vice-President Internal Affairs, Natasha Reimer from the Board of Directors. The removal was due to Conflict of Interest, that is through violation of UWSA Bylaw 7.6.

The motion was moved in the August 13, 2019 Board Meeting and approved by a majority vote. The decision of the Board was then ratified in the September board meeting.

As an elected Executive Director of the UWSA, the Vice President Internal Affairs role is a full time, salaried term position. For confidentiality and privacy reasons, the details of the conflict of interest are available only to the Board of Directors.

Orange Shirt Day: September 30

September 25th, 2019

On September 30, University of Winnipeg Students’ Association (UWSA) encourages all students, staff, faculty and community members to wear an orange shirt to show support for residential survivors and bring attention to other injustices Indigenous children face today. The idea of wearing orange t-shirts was inspired by residential school survivor, Phyllis Webstad and her story. On her first day of school, Phyllis excitedly wore her orange shirt, only to have it taken away and replaced with an institutional uniform. The orange shirt represents the loss of identity and culture at the residential school – the effects of which still prevail to this day.

In response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions’ 94 Calls to Action, UWSA is committed to bringing awareness to the residential school experience. We want the participation of the greater community in delivering the message that Every Child Matters. UWSA in collaboration with the Indigenous Students’ Association will be holding an event in the ASSC to honor residential school survivors. Please join us for a discussion on how Indigenous people are reclaiming their language and culture in a way which is important for their wellbeing and  nations.
