A notice to our membership regarding the VP Internal Affairs

October 1st, 2019

Dear Members,

On September 24, 2019 the UWSA Board of Directors ratified a motion to remove the Vice-President Internal Affairs, Natasha Reimer from the Board of Directors. The removal was due to Conflict of Interest, that is through violation of UWSA Bylaw 7.6.

The motion was moved in the August 13, 2019 Board Meeting and approved by a majority vote. The decision of the Board was then ratified in the September board meeting.

As an elected Executive Director of the UWSA, the Vice President Internal Affairs role is a full time, salaried term position. For confidentiality and privacy reasons, the details of the conflict of interest are available only to the Board of Directors.

Your Green Shield coverage is active September 1, 2019 to August 30, 2020. However, your online accounts will not be active till the end of the Opt-In/Opt-Out Period that ends September 16. Thus means that when you try to access your account, your account status will be listed as inactive and online direct billing services will be down.

You can also connect with Green Shield Customer Service and tell them that you’re on UWSA Green Shield Health Plan that isn’t active yet and want information on your coverage.

Potential Transit Service Interruption

September 1st, 2019

Some of you might have heard about a potential strike or lockout that might happen in September. We know that many students rely on bus service to get to school and we are very concerned about how a potential interruption of transit service would affect our members. While there has been no confirmation of service disruption and we hope that a resolution is achieved soon, we want to urge you to prepare for alternative transportation in case busses are not operating as scheduled.

If you cannot walk, bike or drive to school, please consider rideshare and carpooling. The University of Winnipeg Campus Sustainability Office has some recommendations here. The UWSA will also advocate for reasonable accommodation for students to University faculty. Depending on the length of service disruption, the UWSA and Winnipeg Transit will also begin discussions to get a portion of your U-Pass refunded.

As of this time, all classes will proceed as scheduled. Any changes will be communicated via the University of Winnipeg’s website. Please visit their FAQ section for more information.

Ethical Investments at The University of Winnipeg

August 6th, 2019

Over the past year, the University of Winnipeg Foundation and the UWSA have had several discussions around responsible investing.

While recognizing the work done by the Foundation since 2016, the UWSA recommended that two possible ways to follow through their commitment to invest ethically. Two ways we can move forward are by:

  • Tracking and publicizing our fossil fuel investments
  • And, setting tangible goals beyond baseline Environmental, Social, and Governmental Criteria.

The 2018-19 VPSA, Jade DeFehr presented an update and recommendations to the University of Winnipeg Board of Regents in Spring 2019. You can read the full speech here: Board of Regents Responsible Investments Speech.
