Canadian Federation of Students
Your University of Winnipeg Students’ Association is Local 8, and a founding member, of the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS). Since 1981 the CFS has been the effective and united voice of Canada’s national and provincial students’ movement.
By being a member of the UWSA, you are also a member of the CFS. Today, over 600,000 students from more than 80 colleges and university students’ unions across the country belong to the CFS.
Public post-secondary institutions’ quality and accessibility is determined by provincial governments administering federal funding. Tuition fee levels, student financial assistance programs, and funding for research are all set directly or indirectly by both levels of government. It is vital that students collectively organize at the provincial and national levels to ensure that students’ rights and concerns are fully represented.
Membership in the Federation also entitles students to a number of free and useful services, including the International Student Identity Card (ISIC), the StudentSaver Discount Card, the health plan, Students Working Aboard Program (SWAP), and more!
