Youth Bike Lab Hours

IMG_0048

The UWSA Bike Lab is always a hive of busy activity during the summer months, but one group in particular has been contributing more than its share to the organized chaos that is summer Bike Lab open shop. Every week, dozens of neighbourhood youth drop by the Bike Lab, many of them waiting outside for up to half an hour for the Lab to open, each of them with a vocal resolve to build a bike!

While at first we welcomed their enthusiasm happily, we have come to the realization that our under 18 participants needed their own time. Time in which we could gear our volunteers, staff and programming to directing the enthusiastic, often impatient and boisterous energy of the youth toward the time consuming, focused and intense mental workout of learning to build a bike.

So for the rest of the summer, we will be offering YOUTH HOURS! Since teens are out of school, they will have to drag themselves out of bed and show up to the Bike Lab by 10 a.m. on Mondays. Those with enough gumption to pass the earlier riser test will be asked to volunteer an hour to help patch tubes, break down bikes and organize the lab, each task with it’s own educational component. After their hour of volunteering, the youth will get a chance to work on their build-a-bike projects and benefit from the full attention of our staff and volunteers.

YOUTH HOURS: Monday’s 10 a.m. to Noon (Starting Monday, August 10th)
