UWSA Fashion Show

A student-led fashion show that playfully explores how people imagine university students dress based on their major versus how they actually do. Using pop culture characters to represent “expectations” and real students to show “reality,” this event will highlight the diversity, and true personality of our campus. By blending entertainment, inclusivity, and creativity, the show will bring students together and celebrate the individuality that makes our university unique.

Location: Bulman Student Centre

Date: Friday, November 28

Start Time: 11:00AM

Meet the team behind the UWSA Fashion Show!

Omega Budhathoki (she/her) – Lead of the UWSA Fashion Show and UWSA Vice-President Of External Affairs

Omega Budhathoki came to Canada in her first year with nothing but two suitcases, big dreams, and an even bigger sense of style waiting to unfold. After years of watching “back-to-school hauls” that never reflected the realities or identities of most students, she realized something powerful: the point was never to fit in : it was to show up as ourselves. This show is a love letter to UWinnipeg identities , the messy, beautiful intersections we wear on our sleeves and a passion project to make the campus feel undeniably cool, inclusive, and proudly ours.

This fashion show is born from her belief that the University of Winnipeg is at its best when students express the full spectrum of who they are. From cultural pride to gender-creative expression, from thrifted genius to runway-ready glam, she wants a stage that celebrates the intersecting identities walking these halls every day.

Omega leads this project with the goal of spotlighting student creators, designers, models, storytellers, and movement-makers, building a space where everyone involved can shine just as brightly as the clothes they wear. This show isn’t just an event. It’s a statement:

UW is cool. UW is creative. UW is us.

The Creative Team

Ayesha Raza (she/her) – UWSA Community Liaison Director

Hi! I’m Ayesha Raza, one of the Student Creative Directors for the UWSA Fashion Show and the Community Liaison Director for the UWSA. I’m a 3rd year Neuroscience major who splits her time between campus, community projects, and the creative world. I love cooking, and learning more about different cuisines! I heard about this year’s UWSA Fashion Show initiative through students, and our lovely VPEA. It has been so much fun working with everyone, and I’m very excited to help bring this year’s show to life!

Laurie Boulianne (she/her) – Primary Contact

Laurie’s a Montréal kid who is a pro at shaking things up, having traded in her four-year accounting career for an adventure in Winnipeg. While she recently decided to pivot away from her psychology studies, that hasn’t slowed her down one bit! For her, bringing this event’s vision to life was a passion she couldn’t ignore, and her dedication is why we’re all celebrating today. The event itself grew from a random coffee-shop chat she and her friends had during the summer from which the realization that their university community held far more vibrant personality and sense of style than the boring reputation suggested. Laurie simply committed to organizing that raw energy, guided by instinct, a love for aesthetics, and what she sees as a very lucky knack for handling beautiful messes. She’s honored to have been able to bring this vision from a simple idea to the event you see today.

Mikaela Anne Toledo (she/her) – Primary Contact

Hi! My name is Mikaela and I am one of the creative leads & stylists who have been dedicated to curating this mini passion project that bloomed from a simple conversation with Omega and Laurie at Thom Bargen. I am a third year psychology student who enjoys dressing up for campus like it’s my daytime job. Outside of academics I enjoy fashion, dressing up, having my nails done and working out as my personal hobbies. I was granted the opportunity to work with one of my closest friends from CCO to make this project happen and have met others through this and am excited to be able to share our project and have others witness the light and heart we have spent on this fashion show!

Gloria Jaison (she/her) – Stylist

Hey, my name is Gloria Jaison. My major is Education with a focus on humanities. As a brown-queer woman, fashion has become a tool to express myself to the world. It has served me by connecting me to my culture, to my identity, and to the people I see every day. I was grateful to be one of the stylists for this show through my love of volunteering for opportunities that foster communities that support such diverse identities!

Lea Darlyn Lopez Martin – Stylist

My name is Lea. I’m doing my Master of Arts in Criminal Justice at the University of Winnipeg and Apparel Design at Red River College. I love to knit, crochet, embroider, and up-cycle old pieces into new ones. I’m a big fan of patchwork and customizing clothes to add a touch of personal flair. So, when Ibra messaged me asking if I was interested in helping out I of course said yes! Aside from the textile arts I also love rock climbing, swimming, and reading.

What is it? We are collecting lightly used clothes to create a thrift shop for our students. Each student who shows up at the Fashion Show on November 28 will be able to select one free item from our Thrift Drive.

Why are we doing it? We know students have a tight budget from paying for food, tuition, supplies, and more. To help be sustainable and affordable we wanted to create a Thrift Shop to help lessen the burden.

When is the Thrift Shop? It will be open on Friday, November 28 during the duration of the Fashion Show.
