SUMMARY:International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
DESCRIPTION:Guided by the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination\, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination recognizes that the injustices and prejudices fueled by racial discrimination take place every day. Observed annually on March 21\, it commemorates the day police in Sharpeville\, South Africa\, opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against apartheid “pass laws” in 1960. \nWhile much progress has been made\, Indigenous peoples\, and racialized and religious minority communities in Canada continue to face racism and discrimination every day. This day serves as a call to action for individuals\, organizations\, and all levels of government to actively work to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination\, injustice\, systemic racism and hate. Re-committing efforts\, to ensure all people are respected and have equal access and opportunity to be safe and to succeed. \nYou can find more info at: https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/programs/federal-anti-racism-secretariat/international-day-elimination-racial-discrimination.html

SUMMARY:Last Doggo Days
DESCRIPTION:The UWSA brings trained\, loveable\, cuddly dogs to the University on the last Thursday of every month at The Bulman Student Centre. Doggo Days are a reminder for students to take a break during busy school days. Studies have shown that interacting with pets when stressed can reduce tension and lower blood pressure and breathing rates. Doggo Days are a fun way for students to de-stress with their furry friends. \nAll dogs are trained therapy dogs from St.John’s Ambulance. \nDoggo Days dogs are the last Thursday of every month in the Bulman Student Centre from 12-1:30 PM.

SUMMARY:International Transgender Day of Visibility
DESCRIPTION:Each year on March 31\, the world observes Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) to raise awareness about transgender people. It is a day to celebrate the lives and contributions of trans people\, while also drawing attention to the poverty\, discrimination\, and violence the community faces. \nInternational TDOV was created in 2010 by trans advocate Rachel Crandall. Crandall\, the head of Transgender Michigan\, created TDOV in response to the overwhelming majority of media stories about transgender people being focused on violence. She hoped to create a day where people could celebrate the lives of transgender people\, while still acknowledging that due to discrimination\, not every trans person can or wants to be visible. \nYou can find more info about the day here: https://glaad.org/tdov/

SUMMARY:International Day of Pink
DESCRIPTION:April 9\, 2025 is the International Day of Pink! \nDiscrimination takes many shapes\, whether it’s based on race\, age\, disabilities\, gender or sexuality. The 2SLGBTQIA+ community is no stranger to the bullying and violence that stems from hateful beliefs. While progress has been made towards removing these social barriers from our society\, discrimination still persists. So\, every year\, on the second Wednesday of April\, we urge people around the world to put on a pink shirt and stand in solidarity with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community to continue fighting for equality and acceptance. \nFor more info on what you can do please visit: https://www.dayofpink.org/en/home-2023

SUMMARY:Red Dress Day
DESCRIPTION:May 5 is the National Day of awareness and remembrance for the Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women\, Girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people (MMIWG2S)\, also known as “Red Dress Day\,” coined by Métis artist Jaime Black as “an aesthetic response to this critical national issue.” The ongoing crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women\, girls\, and 2SLGBTQI+ people that we are facing is a direct result of colonization. In Canada\, more than six in ten (63%) Indigenous women have experienced physical or sexual assault in their lifetime. The impact of these disproportionately high rates of violence is felt in all areas of life. The effects on health and wellness include inequitable access and treatment in health care and underrepresentation in health research. \nClick here to learn more: Red Dress Day 2025
